Steamed Modak


For stuffing:

Grated coconut – 1 cup
Jaggery – ½ cup(powdered or grated)
Cashews – 5(finely chopped)
Raisins – 1 tbl sp
Poppy seeds – 1 tbl sp
Cardamom powder – ½ tsp

For outer covering:

Water – 1 ¼ cups
Salt to taste
Ghee- 1/4 tsp
Rice flour – 1 cup


Sweet stuffing:

Take grated coconut & jaggery in a pan and keep on stirring in a medium flame.
Jaggery starts to melt; add poppy seeds, dry fruits & cardamom powder.
Keep on stirring for about few minutes; the mixture should be dry.
Keep this mixture aside.

Dough preparation:

Take water in a pan; add salt.
When the water starts to boil; add ghee.
Now add rice flour. Keep on stirring without any lumps.
Cover the lid & cook for 1-2 minutes. Let it cool a bit and kneed well to prepare smooth dough.
Grease the modak mould with ghee and place ball of dough & press it using finger to make a cavity in the center.
Fill the stuffing in the cavity & seal it with dough.
Now open the mould & gently remove it.
In the same way prepare all modaks.
Steam cook for about 15 minutes.
Drizzle few drops of ghee on the top of modaks; first offered to god & serve.
