Kesuvina (Colocasia) Pathrode

Kesuvina (Colocasia) Pathrode - ಕೆಸುವಿನ ಎಲೆ ಪತ್ರೊಡೆ 

Pathrode is a traditional Mangalorean dish. The Colocasia leaves are most common in monsoon; also available in market.


Colocasia leaves- 4-5
Boiled rice(soaked in water)- 1 cup
Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
Thick tamarind juice- 4-5 tblsp
Coriander seeds- 1 tsp
Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder- 1/4 tsp
Red chillies- 2-4
Asafoetida powder- 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Ghee/oil- 4-5 tblsp
Jaggery- Large lemon sized
Urad dal- 2 tsp
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Curry leaves- 1 strand


1. Soak the rice in water for about 2-4 hours.

2. Take rice in a mixer jar; add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, tamarind juice, turmeric powder, red chillies, asafoetida powder, salt and prepare a thick smooth paste.

3. Add finely chopped colocasia leaves to the prepared batter; mix it well.

4. Now take the idly cooker and put the batter in the idly try; cook for about 15 minutes.
(You can also use banana leaves instead of idly try).

5. Heat 4-5 tblsp ghee in a pan; add 2 red chillies, urad dal, mustard seeds & curry leaves.

6. To the above tamper add grated coconut, jaggery and mix well; To this mixture now add mashed pathrode and mix it well.

Kesuvina (Colocasia) Pathrode

Note: While using Colocasia leaves add adequate amount of tamarind: if it is less you might feel your tongue itched.

(Colocasia leaves itch because of the needle like Calcium oxalate crystals present in the leaves which are broken down while cooking.)
